If you don’t understand why pain in and of itself is not what motivates patients and clients to come to your office, you will never keep them once the pain is gone.

So here is what you need to understand about pain if you are going to build Lifetime patients and clients.

The underlying motivation of pain — and not just that it hurts — takes us back to the 6Ss.  Remember those? Survival, Safety, Security, Sustenance, Sex, and Status.

The 6Ss are the only things the emotional brain, the Limbic system can relate to and where every decision people make about everything in life is decided.

The intensity of their pain, not the pain itself, is a consequence of how many of the 6Ss the person believes are in question emotionally.    A person believing that their pain can threaten their Safety, Security, Sustenance and Survival can have intense pain even with a very minor tissue injury.

But guess what?  Once you get rid of their pain, their motivation to continue care goes away because the their Safety, Security, Sustenance and Survival are no longer being threatened.
